House Dem expects Rep. Tlaib to face censure vote after speaker contest
"I think once we get a House Speaker here, I think that censure resolution will come to the floor and I do think it’s something everyone should consider," Moskowitz said.
Democratic Florida Rep. Jared Moskowitz on Tuesday said he expects Michigan Democratic Rep. Rashida Tlaib to face a censure vote over her public comments on the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict after the House elects a new speaker.
Tlaib, who is of Palestinian background, has vocally criticized Israel in the aftermath of an Oct. 7 Hamas raid that saw terrorists seize 199 hostages and inflict considerable civilian casualties.
"I think once we get a House Speaker here, I think that censure resolution will come to the floor and I do think it's something everyone should consider," Moskowitz said of Tlaib during an appearance on Fox News. "Congress is unified in its support of Israel. I continue to be disappointed in members of Congress who are not willing to listen to U.S. intelligence and listen to the Biden administration, who have said Israel had nothing to do with the issue that happened in the parking lot of the hospital."
At issue was a statement about the alleged Israeli bombing of the Al-Ahli Arab Hospital in Gaza. Initial reports blamed Israel for the destruction of the hospital and reported mass civilian casualties. The Israel Defense Forces have subsequently blamed the Palestinian Islamic Jihad for launching a rocket that misfired and only hit the hospital parking lot. President Joe Biden has stated that Israel was not responsible.
"This is about U.S. intelligence. This is about U.S. information. This is about not willing to trust the Biden administration and U.S. intelligence but instead continuing to pretend like the Ministry of Health out of Gaza is nothing other than a terrorist organization," Moskowitz added. "Good God, it is propaganda to the 10th degree."
Tlaib on Monday called for an independent investigation into the episode and expressed doubt about both the Israeli and Gazan narratives.
"Both the Israeli and United States governments have long, documented histories of misleading the public about wars and war crimes," she said.
On the other side of the aisle, Georgia Republican Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene has vowed to introduce a censure resolution against Tlaib after she participated in a pro-ceasefire demonstration last week that saw protesters stage a sit-in at the Cannon Office Building on Capitol Hill.
"Today [Tlaib] followed Hezbollah’s orders for a 'day of unprecedented anger.' She organized the occupation of the Cannon office building with radical Global Intifada group and anti-Israel activists JVP," Greene posted on X that day. "Tlaib is a terrorist sympathizer and does not belong in congress!"
"After what she did today, I expect even Democrats will join in. She is an Israel hating America hating woman who does not represent anything America stands for," she added.
