House GOP vows 'rigorous oversight' after Biden escaped 'genuine scrutiny' under 'one-party rule'
The House GOP's "Commitment to America" promises to restore economic strength, tame inflation, reduce crime, preserve political freedom and hold Washington accountable.
House Republicans are pledging in their newly-released "Commitment to America" to hold the Biden administration accountable if their party takes back the majority in the November midterms, arguing that the White House has avoided "genuine scrutiny" under "one-party rule."
A national campaign platform inspired by the 1994 Contract with America that rallied Republicans led by Newt Gingrich to capture a House majority for the first time in 40 years, the "Commitment to America" promises to restore economic strength, tame inflation, reduce crime, preserve political freedom, and hold Washington accountable.
The Republican pact with voters vows to get answers to GOP requests for "information and documents" that have been evaded by the Biden administration.
"When backed by subpoena power, the American people will finally get some of the answers they deserve," reads the website for the new party manifesto. "Government should work for the people, not against them. But under one-party rule, Democrats have used their power to silence critics and avoid genuine scrutiny."
As examples, House Republicans highlight that the Democratic majority has neglected to hold hearings on the origins of COVID-19, the Biden administration's botched withdrawal from Afghanistan or the Justice Department labeling parents "domestic terrorists" after a series of heated school board meetings during the pandemic.
House GOP leaders have shared a bundle of unanswered letters that were written to Biden administration officials with requests related to an array of topics, including Big Tech censorship, the southern border crisis and fentanyl overdoses.
As part of its Commitment to America, House GOP leaders are pledging to "conduct rigorous oversight to rein in government abuse of power and corruption."
Another section of the platform focuses on restoring economic strength.
"Everyone knew that wasteful Washington spending would spur inflation," reads the plank vowing to combat the rising cost of living.
"Millions in hardworking taxpayer dollars were sent to luxury resorts and ski slopes, even stimulus checks to prisoners like the Boston Marathon bomber. Yet after more than a year of crushing inflation, Democrats still have no plan to solve it. Americans can't afford Democrats' policies, but we are certainly all paying for them,” the agenda website also reads.
Noting that total federal government spending has shot up more than $9 trillion under President Biden, House Republicans are calling for cutting "wasteful government spending that is raising the price of groceries, gas, cars, and housing, and growing our national debt."
