House GOP expected to back bill blocking funds for sanctuary cities
Democrats have pushed back on the legislation and argued that it would halt funding for important infrastructure projects.
House Republicans are expected to throw support behind legislation on Thursday that denies federal funding to sanctuary cities across the United States.
H.R. 5717, also called "No Bailout for Sanctuary Cities Act," would ensure that sanctuary cities who don't listen to or work with federal immigration authorities “ineligible to receive any federal funds that the sanctuary jurisdiction intends to use for the benefit of” illegal migrants.
A vote on the rule for the bill is scheduled for Thursday but the final vote won't be until Friday, according to Punchbowl.
Democrats have pushed back on the legislation and argued that it would halt funding for important infrastructure projects.
“It’s excessive," Rep. Salud Carbajal, D-Calif., said. "A complete blanket ban on funding. Everybody uses roads, everybody uses schools."
“New York is spending billions of dollars of taxpayer money to house, clothe, feed and educate illegal immigrants,” Rep. Mike Lawler said, according to Punchbowl. “That is something that shouldn’t be.”
