Several House Republicans urged Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent on Thursday to revoke the Southern Poverty Law Center's tax-exempt status in light of allegations the organization funded efforts to fabricate and expand extremist groups.

The letter comes after a federal grand jury in April approved charges against the organization for alleged wire fraud, conspiracy to commit money laundering, and other offenses.

North Carolina GOP Rep. Mark Harris led the letter to Bessent, claiming the organization is not operating as a nonprofit but as a partisan "left-wing political machine," and violated Section 501 of the Internal Revenue Code by targeting conservative and Christian organizations while receiving tax-exempt status.

“The Southern Poverty Law Center has strayed far from what its founders intended," Harris said in a statement. "Instead of fighting hate, it now fuels the very division it claims to oppose ... A political operation should not receive the benefits reserved for a charity.”

GOP Reps. Barry Moore, Alabama; Mary Miller, Illinois; Byron Donalds, Florida; Harriet Hageman, Wyoming; and Andy Ogles, Tennessee also signed the letter.

"The SPLC is an extremist left-wing operation masquerading as a charity," Hageman posted on X. "[Bessent] must revoke their tax-exempt status."
