Jan. 6 committee highlights Trump response to Capitol riot

House select committee investigating the Jan. 6 Capitol Riot on Thursday showcased President Donald Trump's response to the incident, attempting to paint the narrative that he made no moves to intervene while his supporters entered the Capitol.

The committee highlighted Trump's video message telling the rioters to go home, which he released via Tweet around 4:30 p.m. Thursday's hearings focused on a roughly three-hour window between 1:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. on that day, a window between the start of the riot and Trump's message.

Trump spent much of that window inside the presidential dining room watching Fox News, the committee asserted, which featured footage of the riot. Airing footage of interviews with various Trump officials, including former White House counsel Pat Cipollone and press secretary Kayleigh McEnany, the committee focused on their statements regarding Trump's activities while in the dining room.

Witnesses testified that the president spent much of that period calling senators, asking them to object to certifying election results and speaking to Rudy Giuliani, who had served as Trump's point man during the effort to challenge the election results. They also highlighted that Trump did not appear to communicate with any defense or security officials during that time to stop the riot.

Vice President Mike Pence and the rioters' anger toward him also featured strongly on Thursday night. The committee focused on Trump's tweet regarding Mike Pence and the "Hang Mike Pence" chants that came from the crowd.
