A plaque honoring law enforcement officers who served at the Capitol during the riot on Jan. 6, 2021, was installed this past weekend on the Senate side.

The installation Saturday ends a three-year delay in the process, according to the The Hill newspaper.

Congress passed a law in 2022 that set out instructions for the plaque honoring the officers who tried to repel rioters. The law, signed by former President Biden, gave a one-year deadline for installation that never occurred.

Last year, two police officers filed a lawsuit over the delay. In January, the GOP-led Senate unanimously passed a bipartisan resolution directing the Architect of the Capitol to “prominently display” the plaque in a “publicly accessible” part of its side of the Capitol Building.

“After the law was passed, the politics around January 6, 2021, changed, and many politicians who once spoke plainly about the dangers of that day began to rewrite its history, and minimize the terror of the attack,” according to the lawsuit. “Four years since Congress passed the law, and three years since the deadline for its installation has lapsed, the memorial has not been put up.”

The plaque reads:

“On behalf of a grateful Congress, this plaque honors the extraordinary individuals who bravely protected and defended this symbol of democracy on January 6, 2021,”  “Their heroism will never be forgotten.”
