Jordan urges Republican Conference to support him as speaker: Exclusive
Jordan has already received support from several GOP lawmakers, including Rep. Matt Gaetz, who led the effort to oust McCarthy.
Ohio GOP Rep. Jim Jordan is urging his colleagues in the House Republican Conference to support his bid for speaker as he runs on a platform that includes reducing spending and acting as a government watchdog, according to a letter obtained by Just the News.
"We agreed at the beginning of the Congress that there are three fundamental things the House must do: pass the bills that need to be passed, do the oversight, and rein in the spending," Jordan said in his letter.
Jordan, the Judiciary Committee chair and conservative House Freedom Caucus founder, announced he would run for speaker on Monday after eight Republicans joined congressional Democrats in voting Rep. Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., out of the position on Tuesday.
Jordan said that under his leadership he "helped to deliver the most significant legislative accomplishment this congress: the strongest immigration and border enforcement bill ever." He also said he is "doing the oversight and holding the Administration accountable" and has been "pushing for fiscal discipline" his entire career.
Jordan and House Oversight Chair James Comer, R-Ky., have led the impeachment inquiry against President Joe Biden. He also opened probes into the FBI's alleged misconduct, special counsel Jack Smith's investigation of former President Donald Trump and Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis' investigation of the 2020 election in Georgia.
House Majority Whip Steve Scalise, the No. 2 House Republican, is also reportedly considering running for speaker.
Jordan has already received support from several GOP lawmakers, including Reps. Thomas Massie, Mike Carey and Matt Gaetz, the latter of whom led the effort to oust McCarthy.
