The office of Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell says the Kentucky Republican is standing up to the left and "their Big Lie" about voting in the U.S.

"They will try to use fake hysteria to break the Senate and silence millions of Americans’ voices so they can take over elections and ram through their radical agenda," McConnell spokesperson David Popp said in a statement on Sunday evening. "Leader McConnell and Senate Republicans have repeatedly stood up to the left and their Big Lie that there is some evil anti-voting conspiracy sweeping America. This week you'll see even more from us."

Democratic leaders including Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer argue former President Trump and his supporters have engaged in a "Big Lie" about the 2020 presidential election having been rigged.

Schumer said last week that if the GOP does not support advancing the Democrats' voting rights legislation, he would proceed with a change to Senate rules.

"We want to reform the Senate, but that is something that should take some discussion, maybe in a bipartisan way, but we cannot hold up voting rights until people come to a conclusion, if ever, on that reform," Schumer said Tuesday. "We are engaged in active discussions right now."

The New York Democrat has also said senators will debate and consider changes to Senate rules on or before Jan. 17.

McConnell has slammed Schumer for his attempt to change Senate rules over election reform.

"It appears as if the majority leader is hellbent to try to break the Senate," he said. "His argument is that somehow state legislatures across the country are busily at work trying to make it more difficult for people to vote. Of course that’s not happening anywhere in America.

“This is fake hysteria, ginned up by partisans, and our citizens know it. Last November, even in New York, the state’s overwhelmingly Democratic voters rejected several left-wing ballot measures to change voting laws. This Big Lie, that democracy is dying because Democrats sometimes lose elections, is a completely astro-turfed sense of crisis. The emperor has no clothes."
