House Speaker Mike Johnson on Wednesday announced plans to extend the GOP-led chamber's investigation into the select, Democrat-led committee on the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol riot.

Georgia GOP Rep. Barry Loudermilk led the investigation in the last Congress. But this time his subcommittee, which previously focused on several issues, will be singularly focused on J6 and under the Judiciary, not House Administrative, committee.

Republicans have raised many concerns about the Democrat-led committee such as their having withheld and destroyed information and coached witnesses.

Speaker of the House Mike Johnson announced plans for such an investigation in the new session of Congress in a Jan. 2 social media post after President Biden awarded Liz Cheney the Presidential Citizens Medal for her role in the controversial committee's work, according to Mollie Hemingway in The Federalist

“The Jan 6 Select Committee manipulated AND destroyed evidence — created a fake, phony narrative all to try and hurt Trump. They even hired a TV producer from the legacy media in a desperate attempt to legitimize what Americans knew was a total hoax and complete waste of time,” Johnson said on X. “Be assured of this: House Republicans WILL continue our investigation into this corrupt committee and it will be FULLY FUNDED so it can continue next Congress.”

Loudermilk said members of the new committee will consider “significant changes in how we secure [the Capitol] building and how we secure the people that are here, and also member security, and also looking at the number of intelligence failures that we have found,” according to Politico.
