McCarthy says he will have GOP conference 'pick somebody else' to run for speaker
McCarthy said being speaker was "one of the greatest honors," but he will not try to secure the position again.
Rep. Kevin McCarthy following his ouster from the role of House speaker says it was an honor to serve, but he is going to have the Republican Conference pick someone else to run for the position.
During a congressional press Tuesday, after eight House Republicans joined Democrats to vote 216-210 to remove McCarthy from his leadership position, the California Republican said he does not regret his actions and that he "loved every minute" of his service as speaker.
McCarthy said being speaker was "one of the greatest honors," but he will not try to secure the position again.
"I will not run for speaker again. I will have the conference pick somebody else," McCarthy said.
North Carolina GOP Rep. Patrick McHenry is currently acting speaker.
Ohio Rep. Jim Jordan on Wednesday became the first Republican to publicly say he would run for the position of speaker.
