McCarthy allies try to adjourn House to regroup amid McCarthy's failing speaker bid

Allies for House Republican leader Kevin McCarthy are trying Wednesday to adjourn the chamber until Thursday, in an apparent effort to regroup as McCarthy continues to try to find enough votes to make him speaker.

It's unclear whether Democrats would support such a move – as a fourth round of voting is scheduled to begin at noon Wednesday.

McCarthy's allies are supportive of adjourning, but the procedural move would need a majority of members present, according to a source. Democrats, along with McCarthy's GOP critics, could oppose the motion.

The California Republican failed to garner enough support to win the speakership on Tuesday during three rounds of voting. Members of the conservative House Freedom Caucus opposed McCarthy as speaker and are voting for others.

The chairman of the House Freedom Caucus, Republican Rep. Scott Perry, signaled Wednesday morning that a deal has not been reached with McCarthy in response to the conference rules changes the caucus wants implemented. 

The House ultimately began the fourth round of voting on Wednesday without adjourning.
