Democratic New Jersey Sen. Bob Menendez filed to run for reelection to the Senate on Monday as an independent candidate, even as his alleged bribery trial is underway.

Menendez is currently facing allegations that he and his wife Nadine accepted bribes to benefit foreign governments in countries such as Egypt and Qatar, while he was chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

The senator's petition to run on Monday had almost 2,500 signatures, even though he only needed 800 signatures to gain ballot access, according to CBS News.
