New Jersey Democratic Rep. Mikie Sherrill will resign her House seat Thursday as part of her transition to becoming her home state's governor early next year.

Sherrill defeated Republican Jack Ciattarelli during the general election earlier this month, and will replace outgoing New Jersey Democratic Gov. Phil Murphy in the governor's mansion. She is expected to be sworn in on Jan. 20.

The lawmaker notified Murphy and House Speaker Mike Johnson of her resignation from the lower chamber on Tuesday, and delivered her final House address last week.

“It has been an honor to serve the residents of the 11th Congressional District since 2019,” Sherrill wrote to Murphy. “I’ve been proud to fight for our communities, getting shovels in the ground for the Gateway Tunnel project, slashing through red tape on critical flood mitigation projects, protecting Picatinny Arsenal’s mission, and funding community projects that support our students, infrastructure, and public safety.”

Murphy is expected to call for a special election to replace Sherrill on Friday, according to The Hill.
