Montana GOP Sen. Steve Daines says he will not seek reelection in November
Daines, who was first elected to the House in 2012 before getting elected to the Senate in 2014, did not cite a reason for his departure but said he was "ready for whatever comes next."
Montana Republican Sen. Steve Daines announced Wednesday he will not seek another term in the Senate this November, ending a career in Congress that spans over a decade.
The announcement comes just two days after Montana GOP Rep. Ryan Zinke dropped his own bid for reelection, citing health issues that stem from his time in the United States military.
Daines, who was first elected to the House in 2012 before getting elected to the Senate in 2014, did not cite a reason for his departure but said he was "ready for whatever comes next."
“Serving the people of Montana in the U.S. House and the U.S. Senate the past 13 years has been the greatest honor of my professional career," Daines said in a video on X. "I’m grateful to God for allowing me to serve, but after much careful thought, I’ve decided not to seek reelection.
“Prior to public service, I spent 28 years in the private sector," he continued. "While I found those years very rewarding, they didn’t compare to the fulfillment I found in public service. I’m energized, I’m encouraged and I’m ready for whatever comes next."
The announcement also comes the same day Utah GOP Rep. Burgess Owens said he is not seeking another term in Congress, stating he has concluded that the next chapter of his "mission would be best pursued outside elected office."
