House Democrats gathered Wednesday to consider changing its rules after a pair of lawmakers crossed the aisle this week, which helped Republican leaders advance a series of GOP messaging bills that were on track to fail.

Democratic Reps. Jared Golden of Maine and Marie Gluesenkamp Perez of Washington state voted to advance the package, catching House Democratic leadership off guard. House Democratic Whip Katherine Clark said the vote came as a "surprise." 

The legislative package included a resolution that denounced socialism. The resolution passed Tuesday night.

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries told reporters after the Democratic Committee on Caucus Rules meeting that no decisions were made in the meeting so far but that all options are still on the table.

“It’ll be an ongoing discussion through the vehicles that have been set up, including meetings related to the Committee on Caucus Rules, as well as more informal discussions that will continue to proceed during the balance of the time that we’re here,” Jeffries said. 

The liberal leader also said they had not decided whether any changes made to party rules would be in effect for the current congress. 

The issue comes after Democratic lawmakers have historically voted against rules as a whole, even if individual lawmakers go on to support the underlying legislation on a final vote.

Jeffries said he will be meeting with Golden and Gluesenkamp Perez later in the day on Wednesday.
