A non-voting Democratic delegate's mic was cut off during the House speaker election on Friday.
Delegate Stacey Plaskett, a non-voting House member representing the Virgin Islands, gave a fiery speech on the House floor about how U.S. territories should be able to vote on the House floor.
The presiding officer told Plaskett that House rules prohibit members representing territories as well as the District of Columbia from voting for speaker on the House floor.
Despite being read the rules, Plaskett continued speaking, arguing that she has a voice and she should be able to vote for Rep. Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., for House speaker.
"This nation has a territories and a colonies problem," she said. "What was supposed to be temporary has now effectively become permanent. We must do something about this problem."
Plaskett's mic at the podium was muted while she was talking. She eventually went back to her seat.
