Rep. Anna Paulina Luna says she hasn't ruled out running for GOP conference chair
New York GOP Rep. Elise Stefanik became the GOP conference chairwoman in 2021 after Rep. Liz Cheney, R-Wyo., was ousted from the position.
Congresswoman Anna Paulina Luna, R-Fla., on Monday said she hasn't ruled out running for House GOP conference chair, as the position opens up following New York Republican Rep. Elise Stefanik's new appointment.
“I haven’t ruled out running...many people are saying I should," Luna said, according to a spokesperson from her office. "Whoever it is, I believe it’s important that the conference chair supports President Trump from the very beginning.”
President-elect Donald Trump recently announced that he was appointing Stefanik as the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, calling her an "America First fighter."
Stefanik became the GOP conference chairwoman in 2021 after Rep. Liz Cheney, R-Wyo., was ousted from the position.
Reps. Lisa McClain, R-Mich., and Kat Cammack, R-Fla., are both running for the position, according to The Hill. Current House GOP Vice Chair, Blake Moore, R-Utah, is also reportedly interested in the position.
Internal leadership elections for the position will take place on Wednesday, according to the outlet. Conference chair is the fourth highest position in the House Republican caucus, or conference, after speaker, majority leader and whip.
As of now, the House is expected to keep a slim majority as some races around the U.S. still have not been called.
