Connolly beats AOC in bid to lead Oversight Democrats
The new Congress will return on Jan. 3 of next year.
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., lost to Rep. Gerry Connolly, D-Va., in the race to be the top Democrat on the House Oversight Committee.
Connolly will replace Rep. Jamie Raskin, D-Md., as ranking member as Raskin is set to lead Democrats on the House Judiciary Committee in the next Congress.
Some younger members pushed for Ocasio-Cortez to take the post in an attempt to get younger lawmakers more involved in leadership, according to CBS News.
Connolly, 74, defeated Ocasio-Cortez, 35, in a 131 to 81 vote, according to Fox News correspondent Chad Pergram.
