House Republican Whip Rep. Steve Scalise praised the police for saving his life in 2017 when a gunman opened fire on the Republican congressional baseball team.

"I wouldn't be here if it wasn't for the best of what policing is," Scalise said, noting that "the United States Capitol Police, David Bailey, and Crystal Griner are the epitome of what law enforcement officers around this country are like and the heroism that they display."

The congressman's comments came on the third anniversary of the day he was shot.

During the interview on Fox & Friends Sunday, the Louisiana Republican said that while some "bad apples" exist in the police force, most police do not fall into that category.

Scalise said that police reform should be done in a bipartisan fashion. "And there's Republicans and Democrats trying to come together to get to a place where we can actually see real reform," he said.

"It shouldn't be a divisive debate," Scalise said. "I think after George Floyd you saw everybody come together and say that was wrong and bad cops need to be held accountable like anybody else."
