Sen. Durbin asks House panel for Gaetz ethics report
Gaetz resigned from Congress Wednesday evening after President-elect Donald Trump tapped him to become the U.S. Attorney General.
Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., on Thursday requested that the House Ethics Committee provide the report regarding former Florida Rep. Matt Gaetz to the upper chamber.
Gaetz resigned from Congress Wednesday evening after President-elect Donald Trump tapped him to become the U.S. Attorney General. House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., confirmed his resignation.
Durbin chairs the Senate Judiciary Committee and requested the House Ethics Committee “preserve and share” its report on Gaetz where he faces allegations of illicit drug use and sexual misconduct.
“The sequence and timing of Mr. Gaetz’s resignation from the House raises serious questions about the contents of the House Ethics Committee report," Durbin said, according to The Hill. "We cannot allow this valuable information from a bipartisan investigation to be hidden from the American people."
“Make no mistake: this information could be relevant to the question of Mr. Gaetz’s confirmation as the next Attorney General of the United States and our constitutional responsibility of advice and consent," he added.
Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas., also said that he would like to review the ethics report of Gaetz during the confirmation process.
