GOP Senator Scott says border security deal with Democrats 'dead on arrival'
Sen. James Lankford, R-Okla., who is a lead GOP negotiator a potential border deal, says negotiations are ongoing
Republican Sen. Tim Scott says the reaching a deal with Democrats on border security is now "dead on arrival."
The South Carolina lawmaker made the comment Wednesday night on Fox News, following Senate GOP leader Mitch McConnell reportedly telling members of his conference that any agreement with Democrats on border security tied to Ukraine aid could undermine former President Trump's 2024 campaign, which is heavily focused on the crisis at the southern border.
"Number one, it's dead on arrival. Number two, Democrats prefer the issue than any solution," said Scott, who after dropping out of the 2024 presidential race has backed the front-running Trump.
"Never forget, any issue impacting marginal people they go with problem not with solution," Scott also said on Fox News on Wednesday evening.
Still, Sen. James Lankford, R-Okla., who is a lead GOP negotiator a potential border deal, said Thursday that the negotiations are ongoing.
Lankford's office was not immediately available for further comment.
Scott also responded to McConnell reportedly referring to Trump as the GOP presidential nominee.
"The entire party should coalesce around Trump today, not tomorrow, today, so we're only talking about Joe Biden and his four years versus Donald Trump and his four years and we win because the American people win," Scott said.
