Senate confirms Marty Makary to lead the FDA
Makary has vowed to help the Trump administration with its efforts to help stem the obesity and chronic illness crises engulfing the country.
The Senate on Tuesday night confirmed Dr. Marty Makary to lead the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in a 56-44 vote that was largely along party lines.
The new confirmation comes just hours after the Senate confirmed Dr. Jay Bhattacharya to lead the National Institutes of Health. Both leaders will serve under Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.
President Donald Trump nominated Makary, who has long criticized the FDA, last November.
Makary has vowed to help the Trump administration with its efforts to help stem the obesity and chronic illness crises engulfing the country.
"We now have a generational opportunity in American healthcare," Makary said at his confirmation hearing earlier this month. "President Trump and Secretary Kennedy's focus on healthy foods has galvanized a grassroots movement in America. Childhood obesity is not a willpower problem, and the rise of early-onset Alzheimer's is not a genetic cause. We should be, and we will, be addressing food as it impacts our health."
