Senate confirms Scott Turner as Housing and Urban Development secretary
Turner previously worked as the executive director of the White House Opportunity and Revitalization Council during President Donald Trump's first administration.
The Senate on Wednesday confirmed Scott Turner as the new Department of Housing and Urban Development secretary, making him the latest Cabinet official to be confirmed in a bipartisan vote.
Turner, a National Football League veteran, was confirmed in a 55-44 vote. Turner previously worked as the executive director of the White House Opportunity and Revitalization Council during President Donald Trump's first administration, which he claimed had resulted in an "Unprecedented Effort that Transformed our Country's most distressed communities."
Trump nominated Turner to lead the department in November, shortly after he was elected to a second term in the White House. He will now oversee the department's $70 billion budget and roughly 8,000 employees.
“Scott Turner is another positive addition to the President’s cabinet at the Department of Housing and Urban Development," former Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said in a statement. "His experience spearheading creative solutions, like Opportunity Zones, will be needed to cut bureaucratic red tape and reform our failed federal housing policies.
"I look forward to working with Secretary Turner to help the agency better serve the American people, particularly improving its delivery of resources to distressed communities," he added.
Turner has since been sworn in by Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas.
The new secretary's confirmation comes the day after the Senate confirmed Pam Bondi as attorney general. She was sworn in on Wednesday.
