Senate clears way for final vote on Pam Bondi as attorney general
The Senate advanced Bondi's confirmation to a final vote along party lines, in a 52-46 vote, defeating the filibuster.
The Senate on Monday night voted to invoke cloture on President Donald Trump's attorney general nominee Pam Bondi, ending debate on her nomination and setting her up for a final vote.
Trump nominated Bondi for the post at the end of last year, after former Florida GOP Rep. Matt Gaetz withdrew his name from consideration. Bondi, however, has plenty of experience, serving as Florida's attorney general from 2011-2019.
The Senate advanced Bondi's confirmation to a final vote along party lines, in a 52-46 vote, defeating the filibuster, according to Fox News. Bondi was advanced out of the Senate Judiciary Committee along party lines last month, in a 12-10 vote.
Bondi said that if she's confirmed she will focus on enforcing federal law without considering political affiliations.
"Politics has to be taken out of this system," Bondi told the committee. "This department has been weaponized for years and years and years, and it has to stop."
The Senate's moves come the same day they confirmed Chris Wright for Energy secretary, and the Senate Agriculture Committee advanced Brooke Rollins' nomination to lead the Department of Agriculture out of committee.
