Senate Republicans blocked the latest legislation Wednesday seeking to curb the president's war powers in Iran amid the regional conflict in the Middle East.

The latest war powers resolution, introduced by Illinois Democratic Sen. Tammy Duckworth, "directs the President to remove the United States Armed Forces from hostilities within or against Iran, unless explicitly authorized by a declaration of war or a specific authorization for use of military force," according to NBC News. 

The legislation failed in a 52-47 split, which saw Pennsylvania Democratic Sen. John Fetterman vote with Republicans to block the war powers resolution and Kentucky GOP Sen. Rand Paul vote with the other Democrats to approve it. 

West Virginia Republican Sen. Jim Justice did not vote in the latest attempt.

The vote comes after the Senate tried to pass the resolution last month amid the military conflict in the Middle East.

The resolution comes after the president faced backlash for threatening to wipe out Iran's civilization if the country did not agree to reopen the Strait of Hormuz last week.
