The Senate Judiciary Committee said Monday it has sent a letter to the Administrative Office of the U.S. Courts, seeking information on allegations that it used taxpayer dollars to promote views on divisive topics.

Senate Judiciary Chairman Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, and Tennessee GOP Sen. Bill Hagerty sent the letter to the AO, which oversees the non-judicial and administrative business of the federal court system, after it received reports that the office used taxpayer dollars to take sides in “hotly debated and divisive political issues.”

The reports include allegations that the office used funds to promote “LGBTQ+ Pride Month Celebration Resources” on its intranet, including hosting a virtual event sponsored by the AO, and requesting federal court employees and judges disclose their race and “gender identity values” as part of an internal survey.

“We are deeply concerned with these recent actions taken by the federal judiciary," the senators wrote. "Not only do they appear to be a poor use of taxpayer resources; they are also highly divisive and undermine the American people’s faith in the judiciary to resolve their legal disputes absent ideological biases.

"The American people deserve to know that the taxpayer dollars they have entrusted to the federal judiciary are being used to administer justice, not to advance a political agenda,” they added.

The letter also included allegations that the U.S. District Court for the District of New Jersey held a “LGBTQ+” event in a taxpayer-funded federal courthouse, which featured a transgender attorney and activist as the keynote speaker.

The Federal Judicial Center also allegedly published, and subsequently withdrew, a “Reference Guide on Climate Science,” over concerns that the information was biased toward attorneys who push climate-related lawsuits.

The senators asked the office to reply to their questions regarding the taxpayer funding by the end of the day on July 8.
