New York Rep. Elise Stefanik on Thursday telegraphed her ongoing support for former President Donald Trump following her election as the House Republican Conference chair, signaling what is likely to be further tension between the pro-Trump wing of the GOP and its increasingly vocal anti-Trump faction.

Asked at a post-election press conference if President Trump is considered "the leader of the Republican Party," Stefanik said that "voters determine the leader of the Republican Party," and "President Trump is the leader that they look to."

"I support President Trump, voters support President Trump," Stefanik said. "He is an important voice in our Republican Party and we look forward to working with him."

The declaration from Stefanik sets her apart from recently ousted GOP Conference Chair Rep. Liz Cheney, who was voted out in large part due to her vocal and continuing opposition to Trump, including her vote in favor to impeach him in January.

At the press conference Stefanik argued that Republican voters "are unified in their support and their desire to work with President Trump."
