Stefanik nominates McCarthy for speaker on House floor
The speaker election takes places on Tuesday
House Republican Conference Chairwoman Elise Stefanik formally nominated House GOP Leader Kevin McCarthy for speaker Tuesday on the House floor.
The speaker election takes place on Tuesday afternoon.
"Today, I am honored to nominate Kevin McCarthy on behalf of the @HouseGOP Conference to serve as Speaker of the House for the 118th Congress in a new Republican Majority," Stefanik, a New York Republican, tweeted on Tuesday before the House convened.
Stefanik is among the House Republican Conference's most conservative members and supports former President Trump but has also been a loyal member of McCarthy's leadership team.
Some conservatives have vowed to oppose McCarthy on the floor Tuesday. Arizona GOP Rep. Andy Biggs has said he plans to run for speaker.
California Democratic Rep. Pete Aguilar formally nominated New York Democratic Rep. Hakeem Jeffries as House Democratic leader.
