Tennessee GOP Congressman Tim Burchett said Wednesday that he thinks the Senate will make cuts in the SALT tax deduction, with regard to President Donald Trump's "big beautiful bill."

"They are going to probably try to save a few billions by cutting out SALT," Burchett said on the "Just the News, No Noise" TV show. "That is really an unpopular thing. If you explain to most Americans — they're subsidizing bad decisions."

SALT, which is the acronym for "State and Local Taxes," is a tax break that allows taxpayers to deduct part or all of what they paid in state and local taxes from their federal tax liability.

When Trump's "big beautiful bill" was being drafted, House Ways and Means Committee writers offered to increase the cap to $30,000 from its current $10,000 for joint filers making up to $400,000 a year.

Earlier this month, Illinois GOP Rep. Mary Miller called the increased SALT deduction cap a handout to rich donors.

Burchett said most Americans aren't a fan of SALT because it results in states like Florida and Tennessee having to subsidize Democratic-controlled states.

"If they want to have an LGBTQ library, it's their own dadgum business," he said. "The rest of the country shouldn't have to pay for it, and they shouldn't be able to take it off their taxes."
