A U.S. Capitol Police officer has died following injuries he received during the siege Wednesday on the U.S. Capitol Building, according to authorities.

The police department has identified the officer as Officer Brian D. Sicknick and said he died at 9:30 p.m. Thursday.

The department also said Sicknick was injured while physically engaging with protesters and that he collapsed after returning to his division office. He was taken to a nearby hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

Sicknick's dead is being investigated by the Metropolitan Police Department’s Homicide. Sicknick joined the Capitol police department in July 2008 and most recently served in its First Responder’s Unit, authorities said. Federal officials are also investigating the death, said the department, which is conducting its own investigation.

The death is the fifth related to the riot Wednesday on Capitol Hill.
