The House failed to elect a speaker on its opening day of a new Congress for the first time in a century on Tuesday.

Conservatives are leading a revolt that has now thwarted Rep. Kevin McCarthy's bid to be House speaker on six consecutive votes.

McCarthy, a California Republican, and his allies worked to persuade defectors to support his bid. Former President Donald Trump called on Republican holdouts via Truth Social to vote for McCarthy.

Lawmakers hoped to resolve the impasse on Wednesday. As of this writing, however, McCarthy continues to fall short in his bid to be the next House speaker after six rounds of voting.
