Diddy accuses federal agents of leaking damaging information to the media that would taint jury
The former music mogul has also requested a speedy trial in a separate letter to the judge on Wednesday, and recommended an April or May 2025 trial date. The government did not object to the request.
Sean "Diddy" Combs on Wednesday accused federal agents in a court filing of unfairly leaking damaging information about him and his indictment to the press, which could taint a jury pool and impede his right to a fair trial.
Combs was arrested and charged with sex trafficking, transportation to engage in prostitution, and racketeering conspiracy last month, in New York City. The indictment comes after a months-long investigation, that included raids on his homes in Miami and Los Angeles. He has pleaded not guilty to all charges.
The allegations come the day before he is expected in court for his next appearance. He is currently being held without bail.
The former rapper's legal team claimed that leaks of a 2016 video appearing to show Combs attacking his then-girlfriend Casandra Ventura have already swayed public opinion of the artist, along with the raids, according to ABC News. The video was leaked to CNN in May, and prosecutors have cited the video in their indictment. Combs has apologized for his actions in the video.
"[The leaks] have led to damaging, highly prejudicial pretrial publicity that can only taint the jury pool and deprive Mr. Combs of his right to a fair trial," the defense said in its filing.
The former music mogul also requested a speedy trial in a separate letter to the judge on Wednesday, and recommended an April or May 2025 trial date. The government did not object to the request.
"The Government will be available for trial on a date set by the Court, although it remains within the Court's discretion to set a trial date at the outset of the case or at a later time," prosecutors wrote.
