Ex-Proud Boys leader Enrique Tarrio's sentencing delayed by judge's illness
The U.S. government is asking for Tarrio to be sentenced to 33 years in prison,
Former Proud Boys leader Enrique Tarrio's sentencing for his role in the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol riot is now scheduled for Sept. 5 after the trial judge was sick Wednesday, the original sentencing date.
The U.S. government is asking for Tarrio to be sentenced to 33 years in prison, which is nearly twice as long as the harshest prison sentence so far among the hundreds of Capitol riot cases.
U.S. District Judge Timothy Kelly, who oversaw the trial of Tarrio and four other former Proud Boys, was sick and unable to preside over Wednesday's planned court proceedings, the U.S. Marshals Service said, according to The Associated Press.
Kelly, who is not required to follow prosecutors' recommendations, was also scheduled Wednesday to sentence former Proud Boys chapter leader Ethan Nordean. Later this week, he was set to sentence the three other Proud Boys members who were convicted alongside Nordean and Tarrio.
