Grand jury indicts disgraced South Carolina attorney Alex Murdaugh for murders wife, son

A grand jury in Colleton County, South Carolina handed down an indictment Thursday to the now-disbarred attorney Alex Murdaugh for the 2021 murders of his wife and son.

South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson and South Carolina Law Enforcement Division Chief Mark Keel announced indictments for two counts of murder and two counts of possessing a weapon during the commission of a violent offense.

Maggie Murdaugh, 52, and Paul Murdaugh, 22, were found shot to death on the Murdaugh family hunting property on the evening of June 7, 2021. The crime was reported by Alex Murdaugh, who said he had returned home to discover their bodies. 

Though Murdaugh initially presented an alibi, he was never dropped by the police as a person of interest, and it has now been determined that blood spatter on his clothing may place him at the scene of the murder last year. 

Murdaugh is currently imprisoned for a slate of other financial crimes pertaining to his now-destroyed legal practice, as well as a history of drug abuse, and an attempted staging of his own murder last year. He is currently being held on a $7 million bond.
