Washington, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser is proposing the repeal of the capital's sanctuary city law, which would allow local police to assist federal agencies with deportations.

The law currently bans local police from working with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement to detain illegal immigrants. The sanctuary city status prevents the city from asking about a detained person's immigration status or releasing them to ICE or from allowing the federal agency to interview a suspect in local custody without a court order.

Bowser is seeking the repeal of the law in a provision that's part of her newly released 2026 budget proposal, Axios reported Wednesday. The City Council has approval authority over the budget.

The proposed change comes as ICE arrested 189 people in the capital this month and ICE agents visited several restaurants in the city, asking to see employment eligibility papers.
