International court to probe possible Afghanistan War crimes including those by U.S.
The U.S. doesn't recognize International Criminal Court, setting up showdown
The International Criminal Court ruled Thursday that its chief prosecutor could open an investigation into allegations of war crimes in Afghanistan, including those possibly committed by U.S. soldiers, according to news reports.
The United States does not recognize the jurisdiction of the court, in The Hague, setting up a likely showdown with Washington.
The ruling is not unexpected. The court’s chief prosecutor signaled last year that she planned to pursue the case, which resulted in the U.S. revoking her visa, according to The New York Times.
The prosecutor, Fatou Bensouda, has said the court, established 15 years ago to investigate war crimes, has enough evidence to show U.S. forces committed such acts.
The investigation would also reportedly include looking into CIA activities in Afghanistan detention centers.
