Jury convicts man of murdering retired St. Louis police captain David Dorn during 2020 riots

Stephan Cannon was convicted Wednesday of murdering retired St. Louis Police Capt. David Dorn during the 2020 riots.

A jury found Cannon guilty of first-degree murder, unlawful possession of a firearm, and a bevy of other charges related to his fatal encounter with Dorn, according Fox 2 Now.

Dorn died on June 2, 2020, amid a string of riots and looting that swept the nation following the murder of George Floyd. Dorn sustained a fatal gunshot wound in the torso at 2:30 a.m. while protecting a friend's pawn shop from looters. He was 77 at the time of his death.

Cannon was arrested on June 7 and accused of first-degree murder.

Footage of Dorn dying on the sidewalk went viral and his name became a rallying cry on the right in opposition to the violent riots sweeping the nation at the time. Dorn's wife, Ann, spoke at the Republican National Convention in 2020.

Following the reading of the verdict, Cannon's family left the courtroom screaming while Dorn's broke into tears, the local Fox affiliate reported.
