A progressive group styling itself as pro-“free speech” this week announced the filing of a lawsuit meant to bar Georgia Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene from seeking reelection, claiming Green participated in the “insurrection” at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021.

Many U.S. liberals have continued to insist over the last fourteen months that the riot at the Capitol—perpetrated by unarmed demonstrators who largely wandered around the Capitol building for several hours before dispersing and/or being arrested by police—constituted a direct attack on the United States government and an attempt to “overturn” the 2020 elections.

The nonprofit group Free Speech for People announced this week that it was taking part in a lawsuit “alleg[ing] that Greene is constitutionally disqualified from public office under Section Three of the Fourteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, on the grounds that she helped facilitate the January 6, 2021 insurrection."

Green, the group claims, “helped facilitate” the riot, either helping to plan the incident itself or helping to plan “the pre-attack demonstration and/or march on the Capitol with knowledge that it was substantially likely to lead to the attack.”

No evidence has yet emerged publicly linking Greene to the incident.

No defendants who participated in the Jan. 6 riot, meanwhile, have yet been charged with insurrection.
