Menendez hit with 12 additional charges in superseding indictment
The new charges include bribery, extortion, acting as a foreign agent, and obstruction of justice.
New Jersey Democratic Sen. Bob Menendez on Tuesday was charged with 12 additional counts in a superseding indictment as part of an ongoing case alleging his acted as a foreign agent on behalf of Egypt.
Last week, Menendez's associate Jose Uribe pleaded guilty to seven counts, admitting he helped the senator secure a new vehicle for his now-wife in exchange for help shutting down an investigation into him.
The new charges include bribery, extortion, acting as a foreign agent, and obstruction of justice, The Hill reported. Menendez pleaded not guilty to the original charges in September and has refused to resign. He did step down as chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, however, pursuant to Democratic conference rules.
Menendez's trial is set for May 6.
The original indictment alleged that Menendez had used his position to benefit Egypt and several New Jersey businessman in exchange for both cash and solid gold, some of which was discovered during a law enforcement search of his house.
