Mexico President Andrés Manuel López Obrador says he has put United States and Canadian embassies on "pause” as a result of ambassadors from the countries criticizing his judicial reform proposal.

"There is a pause," he said during a press conference Tuesday.

Part of Lopez Obrador's judicial reform plan includes requiring judges to be elected to office, which critics have said threatens the independence of the judicial system.

Activists have taken to the streets to protest the plan.
