Democratic New Jersey Sen. Bob Menendez's wife, Nadine, has sought a delay of her upcoming May 6 trial in light of an adverse medical development.
"Ms. Menendez was recently diagnosed with a serious medical condition that will require a surgical procedure in the next four to six weeks as well as possibly significant follow-up and recovery treatment," her attorneys wrote to U.S. District Judge Sidney Stein, according to The Hill.
Her attorneys further stated that Menendez's health had prevented her from working with them to prepare a defense and specifically asked the judge to scheduling a hearing in eight weeks.
Menendez and her husband face a litany of charges related to bribery allegations. The senator has faced allegations of acting as a foreign agent of the Egyptian government as well. Both have pleaded not guilty.
