The New Jersey gym owner who punched a police officer during the Jan. 6 Capitol riot was sentenced Wednesday to three-plus years in prison.
The defendant, Scott Fairlamb, 44, pleaded guilty to avoid a trial. He was the first person to be sentenced for assaulting a law enforcement officer during the riot, according to the Associated Press.
His 41-month sentence is the longest among the 32 riot-related ones so far handed down.
The sentence by District Judge Royce Lamberth was the first for assaulting an officer and is expected to a benchmark for similar upcoming cases, with more guilty pleas likely in the coming months.
Fairlamb is a boxing coach and former mixed martial arts fighter, the wire service also reports. He apologized and expressed remorse for his actions, saying, "I take full responsibility for what I did that day. That’s not who I am. That’s not who I was raised to be."
