Protests erupt for second night after fatal police shooting in Minneapolis suburb

Protests erupted for the second night in a Minneapolis suburb after a police officer fatally shot a black man in a traffic stop.

Forty protesters were arrested, according to the Associated Press. 

Police Chief Tim Gannon, of the city Brooklyn Center, said the officer intended to use a Taser, not a handgun and called the shooting Sunday an "accidental discharge."

Hundreds of protestors have demonstrated in the streets following the death of 20-year-old Dauante Wright, amid hundreds of police officers in tactical gear who reportedly have fired tear gas or smoke to disperse crowds.

According to body camera footage of the shooting, police were attempting to arrest Wright in a traffic stop when he appeared to try to get back into his vehicle. One of three officer, identified as 26-year-veteran Kim Potter, is seen firing a shot. Wright drove away, crashed a short distance away and died.

"I'll Tase you! I'll Tase you! Taser! Taser! Taser!” Potter can be heard saying in the video.

The incident and the protests occur in the third week of the trial of ex-Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin in the May 2020 death of George Floyd that spark a summer of protests around the world.
