RNC sues Nevada State Secretary Aguilar alleging poor maintenance of voter rolls
Of Nevada's 17 counties, the RNC highlighted five that they asserted were likely in violation.
The Republican National Committee and Nevada GOP on Monday filed a lawsuit against Nevada Secretary of State Francisco Aguilar alleging that the state has failed to maintain accurate voter registration records.
They specifically point to the National Voter Registration Act and contend that a litany of irregularities indicated that Aguilar has failed to fulfill his duties and comply with the NVRA. Of Nevada's 17 counties, the RNC highlighted five that they asserted were likely in violation.
At least three counties, they claim, have more registered voters than adult citizens while at least two have registration rates above 90%, which is well above the statewide average.
"Election integrity starts with clean voter rolls, and that’s why the National Voter Registration Act requires state officials to keep their rolls accurate and up-to-date," RNC Chairman Michael Whatley said in a press release. "Nevada has universal mail voting and no voter ID requirement, which makes Secretary of State Cisco Aguilar’s failure to comply with the NVRA and provide accurate voter rolls all the more concerning."
"Securing clean voter rolls in Nevada is a critical step towards ensuring that it will be easy to vote and hard to cheat," he added.
The RNC is seeking a judicial order requiring the state to devise a plan to ensure compliance with the NVRA and to clean up its registration lists.
Nevada has backed Democratic presidential candidates since 2008, albeit by narrow margins. Former President Donald Trump, however, leads President Joe Biden in the state by an average 5.6%, according to RealClearPolitics.
