RNC sues Wisconsin city for not hiring more GOP poll workers in primary
"Racine deliberately excluded Republicans and violated the law," RNC Chairman Michael Whatley said.
The Republican National Committee filed a lawsuit against Racine, Wis., for allegedly not hiring more Republican poll workers for the primary election last month, contrary to state law.
The RNC announced the lawsuit on Tuesday after filing it on Friday.
The city of Racine hired eight Republicans, seven Democrats, and 90 unaffiliated election inspectors for the August 13 primary election, according to public records cited in the lawsuit. However, 55 Republican election inspectors had been approved to work the primary.
State law requires election inspectors to "be affiliated with one of the 2 recognized political parties which received the largest number of votes for president, or governor in nonpresidential general election years, in the ward or combination of wards served by the polling place at the last election," the lawsuit cited.
The Wisconsin Elections Commission has also "repeatedly instructed municipal clerks that election inspectors nominated by the Democratic and Republican Parties must be given priority before any unaffiliated individuals are selected or scheduled to work polling locations as election inspectors," according to the complaint.
"Racine deliberately excluded Republicans and violated the law," RNC Chairman Michael Whatley said in a statement Tuesday. "We are suing to hire the number of Republicans that Wisconsin law requires, stop Democrat interference, and uphold election integrity for our country’s most important election."
