The Trump administration subpoenaed several New York Times reporters on Friday following the news outlet's recent reporting on security issues involving the newly commissioned Air Force One, according to the Times.

The aircraft, which President Donald Trump accepted as a gift from Qatar, entered service last week and has already been used for official travel.

According to the newspaper, the subpoenas require the journalists to appear before a federal grand jury in Manhattan on Wednesday. The Times said federal agents personally delivered some of the subpoenas to reporters at their homes.

Reuters was not able to independently verify the newspaper's account, and neither the White House nor the Justice Department immediately responded to requests for comment.

"The appearance of federal law enforcement agents on the doorstep of news reporters should shock the conscience of any American who believes in the Constitution and the press freedom it protects," David McCraw, an attorney for The New York Times, said in a statement Friday.

The subpoenas followed Trump's overseas travel aboard the new presidential aircraft. He flew the plane to a NATO summit in Turkey but departed Wednesday for Mildenhall, a Royal Air Force base in Suffolk, England, aboard one of the older Air Force One jets.

Both aircraft traveled to Mildenhall, where Trump transferred to the newer plane for the return flight to Joint Base Andrews.
