Supreme Court allows Alabama to use Republican-drawn congressional map

The Supreme Court ruled 5-4 on Monday to allow the state of Alabama to use a Republican-drawn congressional map after a lower court ruled that the map violates the Voting Rights Act.

Chief Justice John Roberts joined the three liberal justices, Elane Kagan, Sonia Sotomayor and Stephen Breyer, in dissenting.

Justice Kagan wrote that the decision "does a disservice to Black Alabamians who under that precedent have had their electoral power diminished" under the map.

"Contrary to the dissent’s mistaken rhetoric, I take no position at this time on the ultimate merits of the parties’ underlying legal dispute," Justice Kavanaugh wrote. "And I need not do so until the Court receives full briefing, holds oral argument, and engages in our usual extensive internal deliberations."
