Trump backs Johnson amid Greene ouster threat
Greene filed a motion to vacate Johnson before the House went into recess and recently circulated a letter to her colleagues outlining what she believed to be the failures of lower chamber leadership.
Former President Donald Trump on Friday offered words of support for House Speaker Mike Johnson, contending that he was performing admirably under difficult circumstances and that he believed Georgia GOP Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, who has threatened to force his ouster, understood that.
Greene filed a motion to vacate Johnson before the House went into recess and recently circulated a letter to her colleagues outlining what she believed to be the failures of lower chamber leadership. The pair met this week to discuss Greene's concerns, though it did not result in a rapprochement.
"We're getting along very well with the Speaker and I get along very well with Marjorie. We have a Speaker who was voted in and it was a complicated process," Trump said in a Friday press conference, according to The Hill. "It's not an easy situation for any Speaker."
"I think he's doing a very good job, he's doing about as good as you’re going to do and I'm sure that Marjorie understands that... She's a very good friend of mine and I know she has a lot of respect for the Speaker," he added.
Greene has specifically taken issue with Johnson's support for a compromise budget package that largely did not address Republican priorities.
"Speaker Johnson's omnibus did nothing to stop Biden's deadly border invasion—it fully funded it," she wrote in the her letter to colleagues. "It did nothing to stop the energy-killing Green New Deal climate agenda—it fully funded it. It did nothing to stop the weaponized DOJ and FBI—it fully funded it. It did nothing to stop the trans agenda on kids—it fully funded it. It did nothing to stop abortion—it fully funded FULL-TERM abortion clinics, and so much more."
