The Trump Department of Justice has opened a criminal probe into Federal Reserve governor Lisa Cook after the president announced her firing over mortgage fraud allegations.

The DOJ has reportedly issued subpoenas in pursuit of information related to those allegations, the Wall Street Journal reported, citing "U.S. officials familiar with the matter."

Trump announced Cook's firing in late August, saying “[t]he American people must be able to have full confidence in the honesty of the members entrusted with setting policy and overseeing the Federal Reserve."

It remains unclear whether Trump has the authority to fire Cook, and she has sued to challenge her termination.
