Former Israeli ambassador Michael Oren urges US to send more ammunition to Israel

Former Israeli ambassador to the United States Michael Oren on Monday sounded the alarm about a shortage of ammunition in the war-torn country, and urged the U.S. to help them restock.

Oren, who was the Israeli ambassador to the U.S. during former President Barack Obama's presidency, noted that there was an ammunition shortage in the West because of the war in Ukraine.

"I spent part of the summer in the military, even at my advanced age, I went up north and and I visited artillery emplacements, and they showed me just how low they are on ammo, particularly what's called 155 millimeter ammunition, tank ammunition," Oren said on the "John Solomon Reports" podcast. "We need it all. Now, we came into this war at a deficit because of Ukraine. So much artillery ammunition had been sent to Ukraine, even ammunition that was stored in American warehouses in the Middle East. And so there's a Western shortage, and we desperately need it."

Oren admitted that the situation in Israel was not currently "dire" but said the lack of ammunition was a serious concern for them.

"It's not dire, and we have other forms of ammunition, right? But as an old paratrooper and infantryman, I'll tell you don't conduct an operation unless you have an artillery curtain around you," the former ambassador said. "That absence of the artillery will endanger our men and it ultimately and force us to use other forms of ammunition which are maybe less accurate, and that'll be a problem too."

Oren concluded that when it comes to the United States presidential election, he is looking for the candidate who is "committed to Israel's defense," and will help them defend themselves by supplying ammunition and other arms supplies.
